A Conversation with our Makers

Every garment begins with the hands of a skilled artisan. Long before a piece is worn and loved, it passes through years of experience, refined technique, and an unwavering commitment to craft. Behind each print, each stitch, and each carefully finished detail is a woman who has honed her skill through dedication, precision, and pride.

In this journal, we honour three masterful makers whose artistry shapes what we create. From the exact placement of hand-carved blocks to the discipline of fine stitching and finishing, their journeys reflect expertise earned over time and a deep respect for traditional craft. This is a celebration of women as artisans, leaders in their field, whose talent, knowledge, and workmanship deserve recognition not just on International Women’s Day, but always.

Eight years ago, Shushila started her journey with courage and determination. The techniques were intricate, the detailing was demanding, and every task required patience. But she was ready to learn.

With time and dedication, she mastered every aspect of the craft, detailed handwork, precise tagayi, careful stitching, neat thread cutting, and flawless finishing. Her hands became steady, her eye for detail sharper with every piece she completed.

Shushila takes special pride in making tassels. From shaping and binding to trimming and perfect finishing, each tassel reflects her skill and love for the craft. Even the smallest step, like thread cutting, is done with perfection, because she believes every detail matters.

Her journey was not without struggles. There were long hours, financial challenges, and responsibilities beyond work. Yet she remained strong. Through consistent effort and passion, she managed to earn with dignity and build confidence in herself.

Radha began her journey in 2003, determined to create a better future for herself. Before entering the world of chhapai (block printing), she worked as a school teacher, but the salary she received was not enough to support her needs. It was a friend who suggested that she try learning chhapai, believing that her patience and creativity would suit the craft perfectly.

Taking that advice seriously, she stepped into printing with curiosity and courage. With dedication and consistent practice, she mastered the techniques of block placement, color mixing, pressure control, and fabric understanding. Over time, her confidence grew along with her income.

Today, with 23 years of experience, Radha stands as a Master Artisan. Printing not only gave her financial stability but also pride, happiness, and a strong identity.

Her journey reflects how one suggestion, combined with determination and hard work, can transform a life.

For the past 10 to 15 years, Kirti Devi has been a dedicated part of the textile and handicraft industry, shaping her journey with patience, passion, and continuous learning. Her hands carry years of experience, and her work reflects precision and care in every detail.

She is highly skilled in thread cutting, ensuring every garment is neatly finished with clean and precise detailing. Her expertise in tagai (hand finishing stitches) adds strength and refinement to each piece. She is also known for crafting beautiful tassels that enhance the elegance of the final product.

Stitching clothes is one of her strongest skills. With steady hands and a creative eye, she transforms simple fabric into beautifully finished garments. Her dedication, attention to detail, and commitment to quality make her an invaluable artisan in the industrya.

Through years of hard work and hands-on experience, Kirti has not only strengthened her craft but also built a reputation for reliability and excellence. Her journey reflects how passion and skill can create meaningful success in the world of handicrafts.
